New Hiring Models Emerging? Hewlett-Packard Becomes a Training Ground

Beyond Law School Traditionally, law firms have been the major outlet for new law school graduates, particularly graduates of elite law schools.  That’s still true but the recession has dramatically reduced those opportunities, at least for now.

One public company, Hewlett-Packard, has decided to hire a few new graduates to train in-house.  That’s a change—in the past, in-house legal departments have relied on law firm training and filled in-house positions largely with departing law firm associates.  They have not generally trained their in-house lawyers internally from the start.

H-P is only hiring four graduates so the program’s impact on the current market will be barely noticeable.  But if the program works, other companies may follow and these programs may expand.  We’ll see whether, a few years out, the type of program begun at H-P can have an impact on law school graduates’ employment opportunities.
